The Things He Could Have Been

W. Nikola-Lisa tackles the Babe Ruth story in yet another book for the young adult reader. In Dear Frank: Babe Ruth, the Red Sox, and the Great War, the author presents left-handed Babe Ruth pitching for the Boston Red Sox as the First World War winds down. In The Men Who Made the Yankees, the author takes us behind the scenes as the new American League franchise in upper Manhattan (originally called the Hilltop Highlanders, later the New York Yankees), win their first World Series title behind the hard-hitting Babe Ruth, now playing regularly in the outfield. In his latest book, The Things He Could Have Been, the author pulls back the curtain on Ruth’s off-the-field shenanigans, offering the reader a humorous, yet highly informative, portrayal of the Yankee slugger. Ruth was multi-talented and could have been many things, i.e., professional golfer, heavyweight boxer, movie star, football player, just to name a few of his interests. Of course, this is all tongue-in-cheek: everyone knows that George Herman “Babe” Ruth was a baseball player, perhaps the greatest baseball player of all time.

Jonathan Dickinson

Jonathan Dickinson’s heroic tale of shipwreck survivors struggling amid “cannibals” and “savages” on Florida’s east coast became a 17th century best seller, But Dickinson was also witness to the last days of Spanish Florida and its Native Americans.

In this revealing book, journalist-historian James D. Snyder narrates the journey in modern English then sheds light on some critical questions:

Why did the Spanish come to Florida? Why did they fail? Why did the Indian population literally disappear after thriving for over 5,000 years? Why were the English hated in Florida? Why did Dickinson, an abolitionist Quaker, own many slaves? What became of them – and of Dickinson himself?

Your Attention Please

Your Attention Please – Announcer/Cop tells the story of a want-to-be disc jockey playing records during a high school lunch hour that became a professional and collegiate sport announcing career spanning five decades.
Like John Ramsey, who announced professional and collegiate sports teams for over three decades, Dennis Packer took his talent to another level.
He announced two football games in their entirety on the same day that were two hours apart. One game, the Japan Bowl, kicked off at noon, and the other, after crossing the International Dateline, the Los Angeles Raiders kicked off against the Cincinnati Bengals at 2 pm.
Off the playing field, Conquest, Mule Train, White Lace, Jamaican Express West, and Up in Smoke were just a partial list of complex investigations of drug trafficking, money laundering, organized crime, and corruption during Detective Packer’s watch.
During the execution of a search warrant at a drug dealer’s house, the arrestee stated to Detective Packer, your voice sounds just like the announcer at Dodger Stadium.

Irishman Dies of Stubbornness

“Irishman dies from stubbornness, whiskey.” So began Christopher Clifford Connors’s obituary of a life that included hunting bears in Russia, inventing limo surfing, surviving a shipwreck, and training with Navy SEALs—for starters. At the end of 2016, Connors’s story captivated the world when the exploits of his sixty-seven years went viral.

Irishman Dies from Stubbornness tells the story of a complex man from the multiple perspectives of people who knew him, especially his daughter Caitlin, whose complicated connection to him drew her close again during his last years.

Loss comes to us all. What will we do with our time here, and how should we honor those who pass? Irishman Dies from Stubbornness testifies to the power of the moments that live on in the hearts of those who love us long after we are gone.

How did he do it?

How did a young man without connections or means go from riding bulls on the rodeo circuit across the country to slinging bull in the courtroom and the Capitol?

As a young man, Billy wrote many goals in a Franklin planner. His top three: own 1,000 contiguous acres, become a lawyer, and build his own firm. Cowboy to Courtroom tells the tale of how he met those goals and more, and what he learned along the way.

The Road to Continental Heart

An artist walks across North America with a group of environmental activists, taking photos, raising ecological consciousness, learning the land first-hand. For each week of the nine-month walk, his friend, a poet, researches each upcoming leg of the walk-its geology and geography, its creatures and features, its social and natural history, its First Nation inhabitants-and sends a poem crafted from the research to that week’s mail drop city.

That’s the premise and the promise of this book. The artist/photographer is George Lawrence; the poet is Steven Dale Davison; the poems map The Road to Continental Heart. Subtitled Befriending, and Defending, the Spirit of North America, this book is a bioregional meditation on the landscapes of North America expressed in images crafted through the poet’s pen and the focused lens. It is an extended love poem for the land we inhabit and an invitation to a vibrant culture of place. And it is a celebration of friendship.

Continental Heart is not just a book of poetry. Forty-one poems beat at its heart. But it also includes photographs, maps, essays, and excerpts from George and Steven’s letters to each other. With its various elements, The Road to Continental Heart describes a four-dimensional journey: eastward across the country, up its mountains and down its valleys, inward toward deeper feelings for our country’s majesty, and onward toward a renewed relationship with our homeland. Your journey awaits.

17 Planets – The Captain

A woman with an extraordinary mind and a dark past demanding revenge. 17 planets divided into four factions whose leaders forgot their inhabitants all arrived from the same place: Planet Earth. A threat that could turn a tool that saves everyone’s life into the worst imaginable nightmare. Elizabeth, a chameleonic and seductive woman, is the only one who can make a difference, but her uniqueness weighs on her shoulders like the world weighs on Atlas’ shoulders.

These are just some of the ingredients of this novel where action scenes alternate with political ones and the relationship between the many characters, as much as the suffering and the claustrophobic anguish, alternate with the human need for love and loyalty. All seasoned with a drop of eroticism and a hint of humor.

In the novel there are a couple of features that I haven’t often found in other science fiction books. First, I worked with an artist to create drawings to add between the chapters in order to clarify the settings, but deliberately not too accurate so that the readers can fill in the gaps with their imagination. Second is the point of view I used. I like to think that science fiction is an excuse to talk about the complexity of human relationships, from an anthropological, philosophical and political point of view. I wanted to touch all the fundamental points for every life story: Power, Value, Freedom, Love, Truth and Justice. I have created the characters using my experience as a psychologist, giving them depth and realism. I also did a lot of research to be as precise as possible about technologies and life in the future on other planets.

Sit Down and Have a Beer Again

The poems and stories that make up Sit Down and Have A Beer, the first chapter here, were in a chapbook published in 1977 by Realities Library. The stories and poems had been published in small press magazines impacting a small cadre of creatives in the country in those days.

The Small Press world of those days was the precursor to the internet – insane editors and publishers who believed that the established publications had simply lost touch with the creative reality of our nation. And, just like the internet, the small presses were eventually bought out by the rich folks who figured out the best way to beat them was to buy them out.

The second chapter of the book contains the other poems that were published in these mags but never collected till now.

Tapestry Of My Mother’s Life

Tapestry Of My Mother’s Life is a biographical account of a woman coming of age in Germany during the 1930s. Malve von Hassell explores her mother’s life through the fragmented lens of transmitted memory, and its impact on the second generation.

Born at her grandfather’s house in Farther Pomerania, 1923, Christa von Hassell had to contend with the increasing and pervasive impact of the Nazi regime. As the child of a German army officer, she moved with her parents often. Through boarding school, university, marriage, the Second World War, life under Soviet occupation, and a new beginning in the West, eventually in America, the biography is an incredible, emotional journey of childhood, survival, and relationships.

Emotional Intelligence at Work

Even though it is seldom acknowledged, the truth is that business runs on emotion—yours and almost everyone else’s. And that emotion is often negative, leading us into bewilderment, dysfunction, and failure.

This book explains how to face up to this reality and respond by building street smarts and business emotional intelligence (BEQ). It supports your business success by developing your ability to recognize and effectively manage the destructive emotional tendencies, hidden agendas, and behaviors that exist all around you, and sometimes within you, that block business progress.

The Rise and Fall of the Traditional Theories of Creation: And Community the Next Emergence

David Shaw proposes a new theory of creation. He gives four arguments for community as the next
emergence based on the statements of four great thinkers: Plato, Thomas Jefferson,
Martin Luther King, and Michael Sandell. These thinkers do not propose community
as the next emergence, but they do identify community as a central process in human
affairs.

A description of his experience with community-building projects is included. While
writing this section, the importance of civic fabric in building community confronted him.
Community does not flow from civic fabric. Community does not flow without civic
fabric. Civic fabric is the foundation for community.

Amelia’s Gold

The sleek Sea Breeze, staggered by the point-blank fusillade, now leaned like a drunk on a lamp post. Fireworks spewed from the engine room. Then it slid under the waves, the gold in its hold plunging towards Blackbeard’s wreck whence it was wrested many years before.
Now… only a lifeboat with six survivors, all lost in the sullen silence of their shattered lives. Amelia Beach confronted her own torments: three lives lost, her family fortune gone, the Confederate cause probably scuttled as well.
She ached to follow the ship down….to quiet oblivion and relief from remorse. But even this meager reverie was thwarted by nuisances of remaining alive: a queasy stomach, the roll of the lifeboat and the sloshing of greasy bilge water into her shoes and icy feet.
