Title: The Twin Moon Heir
Author: Samantha A. James
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
The Twin Moon Heir is a charming fantasy adventure, following sixteen-year-old Addie’s epic journey across a sprawling fantasy land. When Addie’s grandfather goes missing on her birthday, he leaves her with one of his famous puzzles to solve. Addie quickly finds herself unraveling a much larger conspiracy: she is a long-lost princess, heir to the throne of Folkvandail. So begins a wild adventure across a beautiful and strange land, and a struggle to challenge the ruthless leader who has been ruling Folkvandail in her stead. Addie must learn who to trust, and fast, if she wants a chance at claiming her rightful place as ruler.
Samantha A. James has crafted a story with stunning depth, and it’s a highly engaging adventure. This is, in many ways, a magical road trip story. Addie, accompanied by the colorful cast of characters she meets along the way, travels far across the land on her quest. The location descriptions are vivid and creative, and Addie finds herself visiting bustling towns, jousts, inns, and taverns, and communities tucked up near the mountains. The worldbuilding in The Twin Moon Heir is overall incredibly solid. Time passes differently in Addie’s new home, with months being measured in “long moons” and “short moons.” Readers are introduced to secret societies, inventive new fantasy sports, a rich mythology, sets of legends, and new customs and laws that Addie must learn to adapt to.
Addie is a cleverly written heroine, a character who young readers will find themselves rooting for and looking up to. She’s intelligent, skilled in martial arts, and adapts to her new responsibilities with grace and bravery. She struggles initially to settle into the role she was born to play but ultimately rises to the challenge. During her travels, Addie begins her training in formal court etiquette, swordsmanship, and education in the legends and history of her kingdom.
One aspect of The Twin Moon Heir that particularly stands out are the use of puzzles, codes, and ciphers throughout the story. The way these codes are set up is charming and clever, and Addie is skilled at both deciphering these puzzles and leaving her own encrypted messages. Readers will find these moments engaging and enjoy attempting to solve the puzzles alongside Addie.
The opening of The Twin Moon Heir may fall a little flat for readers, as it comes across as somewhat rushed. Addie has a rather passive reaction to her world being upended and asks very few questions before being launched into her new reality. A deeper expansion of the beginning chapters and Addie’s initial reaction to her grandfather’s disappearance would help deliver a more believable and sophisticated introduction to the story. Despite a weak start, the story develops very well and grows significantly stronger. The stakes feel high throughout the story, which features political intrigue, a daring prison break, well-written fight scenes, and a sweet romance subplot.
The Twin Moon Heir is, overall, a promising start to a magical fantasy series. Samantha A. James has created a richly described Tolkien-esque adventure in a world where The Elder Scrolls meets The Princess Diaries. Young readers will fall in love with Addie, her strong convictions, and the magical kingdom she has inherited.
