The Last Summer – Editorial Review

Title: The Last Summer

Author: S. K. Snyder

Genre: Historical Romance

The Last Summer by S. K. Snyder is a historical romance which is set in England, UK. Readers follow Max and Maddy as they struggle against their undeniable love for each other after many years with words unspoken to one another and a hidden secret that could make or break their relationship.

The characters of Max and Maddy are well-formed as the reader gets to know them as well as possible during a short space of time, making their situation, actions, and reactions feel believable and genuine. As much as these characters may not be relatable to readers of the present day, the reader is still invested in the main character’s love story and what the outcome will be for them when the “hidden secret” is revealed. The love story explored in this book is gripping for readers to dive into due to that secret Maddy is holding. Some readers may find that the secret is what keeps them eager to read more.

Throughout this book, great scenery is depicted by describing aspects of the house, the season with its snow, and horses and carriages as means of transportation. These descriptions allow the reader to be transported back in time effortlessly and stay true to the period the book is set in. Although rooted in the past, the author has made this book easy for readers to enjoy and become invested in the storyline, with accessible language and a gentle narrative flow that brings the fictional world to life.

A downside of this book being shorter is that some characters are hard to place, which can make it difficult for readers to form a connection with these side characters. Due to this, a couple of details within chapters become slightly harder to follow than others. So much so, as this is a shorter book, readers may find they become somewhat attached to the characters of Max and Maddy and could feel as though the book has achieved what it had to do without needing to be any longer than it is. How concise the story is adds to its charm, making it perfect for those looking for a heartfelt read that can be enjoyed within a couple of sittings.

The Last Summer is a quick read which packs a punch at the end. It is a light read with fast chapters which overall don’t confuse readers but provide a good amount of background information for readers to build a deeper connection to the story and characters within. The book has a potentially predictable ending to some readers but still an emotional one for others. The story is written in such an endearing way that it’s hard for the reader not to become emotionally invested in the struggles both Max and Maddy face.

The Last Summer by S. K. Snyder is a heartfelt romance that blends emotion with the intrigue of a hidden past. With its fast pace and vivid setting, it makes for a strong addition to the genre that many readers will enjoy.
