World War II Veteran in the Army of Peace – Editorial Review

Title: World War II Veteran in the Army of Peace

Author: Verena Ferrant Harp

Genre: Biography

Paul Cornelius Ferrant was a dutiful young man, whether it be in service to his family, his country, or his God. Paul was one of seven children born and raised in rural Louisiana on a farm where strawberries were the staple crop that sustained the family’s finances. Paul’s plans after high school were to work the family farm, but the United States entering the bloody fray of World War II pushed Paul to register for the draft for military service. His decision to serve on a bomber crew in the Army Air Corps arose from a practical instinct, avoiding the often-ungodly weather conditions on the ground. Ferrant served as a dorsal turret gunner flying scores of missions. The end of his service brought him home, yet he soon would receive a calling that required duty and sacrifice: serving as a man of God.

The life story of Paul Ferrant is a genuine testament to a selfless individual who devoted his life to spreading the word of God. Author Verena Ferrant Harp brings the memory of Ferrant alive through Ferrant’s vivid recollections that spanned much of his century of life, from his bucolic days on the family farm to the skies over Europe where no mission was without danger to southern Louisiana where Paul preached to his community. Paul’s life is told in a pure and unvarnished way that often possesses a folksy manner that is endearing.

A conversation between Paul and God about Paul’s mission highlights a deeply personal interaction that Paul doesn’t shy away from sharing. This unabashed honesty is prevalent throughout the book, whether it be in Paul initially being open to attending religious services or questioning God’s plans for him. In recalling his active duty, there is no mincing of words when relating the dreary maneuvers in the California desert or the boredom of guard duty while awaiting his eventual discharge from the Army Air Corps. There is little hyperbole in this book, just a plain-spoken narrative that recalls a life well lived.

Paul Ferrant felt a sense of wonder as the power of God was revealed to him, a message he almost ignored. Once he allowed the powerful presence into his heart, his faith was cemented. Throughout much of his adult life, Paul sought to share his love of God with others and allow them to feel the same. The sincere love for his family, friends and God is unmistakable with every page.

Paul Ferrant’s life turn from farmer to soldier to pastor is an engrossing story that features more than an interesting turn or two. While certain passages of the book may appear to be evangelizing, they merely reflect the devout faith of Paul Ferrant and his urge to share his spiritual awakening with others.

World War II Veteran in the Army of Peace is an outstanding and unputdownable account of a man who survived the trial by fire of war and dedicated his postwar years in serving a higher power. Author Verena Ferrant Harp has written a book that serves the memory of its subject well, an inspirational book on many levels.
