Title: Swanblade: Year Zero
Author: D.K. Kristof
Genre: Superhero Fiction
In the aftermath of the Pan-Pacific Conflict, New Radion Bay had initially flourished, but gradually succumbed to the menace of crime and rot of corruption. John “Buck” McAllister is a war veteran who returned physically intact but emotionally wounded by his experiences. His post-war career was as a jack-of-all-trades handyman, channeling his energy into productivity. On the day of the meltdown at the energy plant, his selfless heroics saved New Radion Bay, and the grateful owners of Takeda Dynamics thanked Buck by rebuilding his shattered body with atomic elements. Through this reconstructed body, Buck possesses extraordinary abilities that he utilizes as a vigilante fighting the criminal element. The birth of his daughter, Kayla, and the death of his wife push him to retire; however, a new enemy emerges to challenge both Buck and Kayla.
D.K. Kristof has written an immensely entertaining story containing commensurate amounts of action and drama. The vivid imagery is conveyed through both Kristof’s words and the stylish illustrations contained within the book. The foreboding tenor of the narrative is set early on with the aftermath of a destructive conflict factoring into the lives of the residents of New Radion Bay. The plot is compelling as the narrative changes from Buck to Kayla, but Kristof’s stellar narrative never relinquishes its integrity or impact.
Family mattered more to Buck McAllister than any cause or quest, which is why it was easy for him to retire as a crimebuster. He cares for his daughter, Kayla and would prefer her to live a life of normalcy. The only thing that would alter his plans is a threat to his family. This feeling is mirrored in Kayla’s protective instincts over her surrogate sister, Abby, and not wanting her to endanger herself by taking the law into her own hands. The author credibly presents these sentiments with sincerity.
Trauma emerges as one of the pre-eminent themes in the story, as it provides the impetus for the origin story of multiple characters. The shell-shock that haunts Buck McAllister leaves him determined to find a way to help his fellow man, which ultimately leads to his life as a crime-fighting superhero. Kayla’s story proceeds after a harrowing personal loss, and she works her way through this by stepping into the shoes of her father and carrying on his legacy. The villains running loose in New Radion Bay, whether they be the diabolical Archivist or the dangerous Jezebel, suffer from a hurt that still lingers and affects their actions. Kristof writes each character in a distinct and refreshing fashion.
The story of the perpetual clash between the forces of good and evil in New Radion Bay is electrifying from beginning to end. The story unfolds during the early decades of the 20th century, delving into the lives of Buck McAllister and his daughter Kayla. However, the plot’s impact could be enhanced with an extra chapter on their nemeses, such as Jezebel and the Archivist.
Swanblade: Year Zero is an intelligent and character-driven book that packs a wallop from its onset and proves to be a superb read. Author D.K. Kristof has crafted a winning tale with the perfect blend of law and order, justice, and revenge.
