Blurb:

Formed of audio transcripts of covert recordings and team member journal entries, this file documents OPERATION DAWN WOLF, an EYES-ONLY covert operation to identify and terminate the perpetrators of ongoing [redacted] of the highly secret Special Operations candidate selection process.

The transcripts document the progression of [redacted] recruited 2Lt [redacted] (now known as Carrie Harris, aka Candidate Corra Hughes) through the agency’s Special Operations selection process, [redacted].

The files contain numerous redactions to protect the identities of current and past operations and operational agents, lowering the security status of the information from EYES ONLY to SECRET.

No details have been changed or edited, however the final report by [redacted] cannot be downgraded to SECRET and is therefore omitted.

Story sample:

CH:

Good morning, Mr Devlin.

DD:

Doctor, if you don’t mind. Take a seat. This conversation is being recorded as an aid memoire for my records.

CH:

Okay.

DD:

Your name please?

CH:

Sorry.

DD:

It’s fine. Your name?

[Silence]

DD:

Is there a problem?

CH:

No, it’s just…

[Silence]

CH:

…sorry. Which do you mean? My real name or the name I’ve been assigned?

DD:

Your most recent name, please.

CH:

Yes, sorry. [Clears throat] Corra Hughes.

DD:

How old are you, Miss Hughes?

CH:

Nineteen, and Corra’s fine, if you prefer.

DD:

Your height?

CH:

Five foot and nine inches, or one point seven five metres in new money, as my dad would say.

DD:

Weight?

CH:

Eight and a half stone, or fifty-four kilos, when I last checked.

DD:

Which was when?

CH:

On my medical, about two weeks ago.

DD:

Any pre-existing medical conditions?

CH:

No.

DD:

Physical or mental?

CH:

No.

DD:

Any family history?

CH:

My great aunt was a bit loopy, but I don’t think it was diagnosed.

DD:

Thank you.

CH:

I think I’ve already had a full psych screen?

DD:

You have.

[Silence]

DD:

Can you tell me what you feel is your best quality?

CH:

I’m not sure what you mean?

DD:

Okay. Tell me what you like about yourself?

[Silence]

DD:

There is no need to be coy. I’m not judging you. I want you to relax. You seem a little nervous.

[Silence]

CH:

My physical fitness.

DD:

Anything else?

CH:

My hair.

DD:

Your hair?

CH:

Yes. It’s different.

DD:

Strawberry blonde is the new black.

CH:

[Laughter] It’s individual.

DD:

You have a lot to be proud of. Can you not think of anything else?

CH:

I don’t think so.

DD:

What about the rest of your looks? You are very attractive; from an objective perspective, I mean.

CH:

Thank you. I don’t really think about it.

DD:

Okay.

[Silence]

DD:

Where should we start? Your file is pretty full.

[Silence]

DD:

Oh, yes. I remember reading this. Very interesting.

[Silence]

DD:

Okay. What do you remember about your injury?

CH:

It hurt.

[Silence]

CH:

For a long time.

DD:

Yes, I’m sure it did. Maybe you should tell me about how you received the injury.

CH:

I got hit by a car.

DD:

That’s the punchline. Let’s go back a bit further. Remember, I’m here to understand you, get to know how you tick, find your motivation and if by doing that I can help you deal with anything that may be lurking in the past, then all the better.

CH:

And to decide if I’m right for the job.

Author bio:

GJ Stevens started writing fiction at the age of thirty. Even as an engineer with a large family and a full time career with plenty of adult responsibilities, he has always had a creative side. After years of self-suppression, the flood gates opened and his novel In The End is the culmination of many years of finding time from nowhere to learn the craft.

Whilst working to independently publish and make a success of his novels, Gareth lays bare his publishing journey through his blog, drawing together advice and knowledge from those already in the industry.

As a lover of the outdoors, every year he spends weekends out in the desolate countryside of the UK hiking and camping with his long-time friends which he uses as inspiration for both his creative fiction works and the subject of many a blog post. GJ Stevens is on the beginning of his publishing journey and wants to share the highs and lows with anyone who will listen.
