Ender’s Game – Book Review

Let me preface this with the fact that I watched the movie before I read the book. And I liked the movie better.

That aside, this book was okay. The storyline was interesting, although I could never quite get over the fact that the kids were so young, but I think that was intended. As a founding author of the science fiction genre, and a definitive work, this is a very good book.

There were times when the pace lagged a bit but also chapters that were roller-coaster fast. Despite watching the movie before reading this, it was definitely not spoiled at all.

The main character, Ender, is a brilliant little boy who is easy to relate to despite his exceptional situation and futuristic world. He is unique within his world because he is the third child in his family, when having more than two children is only allowed in government-approved situations.

After his older siblings both flopped out of a special program, Ender is the last hope for the world as they prepare to face their toughest enemy for the third time. And this time, they intend to finish the war for good.

His path to becoming a great military commander is shaped by deception and a good deal of competition. The tale is well crafted and the reader slips in easily to observe what the author will reveal.  I enjoyed this, but I am not sure if I will read the rest of the quartet. I am glad I read this for sure, and I will recommend it to any sci-fi or space adventure fan. I’d say 3.5 stars.

    1. I read this book about 6 or 7 times before I realized there were more! Freaking loved the book, and you’re right the movie didn’t do it justice. But it was still pretty good. And, the rest of these books are actually amazing as well!

  2. Ender’s Game is actually rather amazing, especially if you’ve never seen the movie. It’s one of my favorite series because it does so much that other sci-fi books just don’t do. The rest of the series is amazing. It gets really philosophical and ethical. Space ethics, they’re amazing, and Ender’s Game does that perfectly. The rest of the series is also not YA at all.

    1. In my opinion- Ender’s Game isn’t YA. When I was growing up- YA was determined by level of complexity, and language. Now- it’s considered YA, if there are kids or teenagers as the protagonists. Not everything about teens (or kids) is FOR teens (or kids).

  9. A word of advice: don’t give up on the series based on Ender’s Game. Speaker for the Dead is NOTHING like Ender’s Game (For one thing, Ender is all grown up in Speaker for the Dead, and from what I recall when I read the Ender books, Speaker for the Dead WAS book 2, not book 3). In my opinion, Speaker for the Dead was the best book of the series.
    I never bothered seeing the movie. When I first read Ender’s Game, the idea of the movie was being kicked around but it took SO long for the movie to actually become a reality. I am glad to see that you were inspired to read Ender’s Game because you enjoyed the movie. This makes me think I ought to rent it…
